  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------
  7. Icons Control is designed to display as many Windows icons as possible in a 
  8. 10x10 grid. Icons can be copied, renamed, and erased with a click of the mouse.  
  9. Icons Control can even display icons embedded inside DLL or EXE files. 
  10. Displayed icons can be edited, converted to bitmaps, or extracted to ICO 
  11. format (in the DLL or EXE viewing mode.)  In addition, 32x32-pixel bitmaps can 
  12. also be converted to ICO format for use with Windows 3.1.  Furthermore, any 
  13. portion of the screen can be captured into an icon or bitmap. For a complete 
  14. description of Icons Control, please refer to the help file.

  17. INSTALLATION
  18. ------------
  19. Run SETUP from the Windows file manager.  You will be asked to enter a 
  20. directory to install Icons Control (default is Icnctrl.)  For users who 
  21. download the Icons Control package from the internet, you may need to download
  22. a copy of VBRUN300.DLL from the same site.  Since VBRUN300.DLL is about 300K 
  23. and almost everyone running a Visual Basic application have it, I am not 
  24. including it in the zip file to save disk space and download time.  Users who 
  25. wish to receive the software on a 3.5" floppy disk will have every files 
  26. needed (including the VBRUN300.DLL) to run the software.

  28. NOTE: During installation, you may run into copying errors such as 
  29.       "COMMDLG.DLL IS IN USE. PLEASE CLOSE ALL APLLICATIONS AND RE-ATTEMPT 
  30.       SETUP". Just click IGNORE and continue.  This is because you don't have 
  31.       the file sharing setup properly in your Windows environment.  You can 
  32.       avoid these warnings by copying the vshare.386 file into your 
  33.       \windows\system directory and using a text editor to insert the line 
  34.       device=vshare.386 in the [386 Enhanced] section of your system.ini file.
  35.       Otherwise, the software should run normally withou this modification 
  36.       despite of the warnings.

  39. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  40. ---------------------
  41. * Any computer running Windows 3.1 (a 386DX or better is recommended.)
  42. * A standard VGA (a Windows-accelerated graphic board is recommended.)
  43. * A mouse or trackball.

  45. Icons Control has been developed and tested on a 486DX66 with 8MB of RAM, a 
  46. 1 MB Diamond Stealth 24 Windows accelerator board (at screen resolutions 
  47. 640x480x16, 640x480x256, 640x480x65536, 800x600x256, 800x600x65536,
  48. 1024x768x16, and 1024x768x256) and a trackball and mouse.

  50. NOTE: Icons Control may not run properly on video modes higher than 65,536 
  51.       colors. If you encounter "OUT OF MEMORY" errors when running Icons 
  52.       Control, I recommend running Windows at a lower color depth. Some of 
  53.       you may confuse between color depth and resolution. Color depth 
  54.       determine the number of colors are available for displaying images 
  55.       (16, 256, 64K, or 16M (24-bit color.) Screen resolution is the number of 
  56.       pixels available on screen (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, or 1280x1024.)

  59. REGISTRATION
  60. ------------
  61. Icons Control is both freeware and shareware.  Freeware users are free to use 
  62. it to view icons.  Icons Control even displays icons embedded inside DLL and 
  63. EXE files.  The displayed icons cannot be extracted, edited, or converted.  
  64. The extraction, editing, and conversion functions are only available in the 
  65. registered versions (shareware.)  There is no evaluation period to use Icons 
  66. Control.  You may use it as long as you want.  But in order to use the above-
  67. mentioned functions, you must register to obtain the registered version.

  70. PAYMENT TERMS
  71. -------------
  72. Registration is $25.  Registered users will receive the most recent version 
  73. through internet email (uuencoded.) If you prefer to receive the software on 
  74. a 3.5" floppy disk, the fee is $29.  I am working with Bank of America to
  75. allow me to process Visa/MasterCards.  As of this writing, I only accept 
  76. money orders, cashier checks, bank checks, or personal checks (MUST be

  83. A single user license permits a user to use Icons Control only on a single
  84. computer.  Licensed users may use the program on different computers as long 
  85. as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it is being 
  86. used at another, or on a network by more than one user at a time.
